The DVSA has announced changes to the drivers’ hours rules for certain zero emission goods vehicles operating within Great Britain.
Under the new rules, most zero emission goods vehicles with a maximum authorised mass of up to 4,250kg will be treated in the same way as internal combustion engine vans up to 3,500kg. This means they will generally fall under the GB domestic drivers’ hours rules rather than the Assimilated (EU) Drivers’ Hours Rules.
The change is intended to reflect the additional weight of electric vehicles, which is largely due to their battery systems rather than increased carrying capacity.
Operators should be aware that the change only applies to vehicles operating solely within Great Britain. Vehicles towing trailers, carrying out certain operations, or undertaking international journeys, including travel between Great Britain and Northern Ireland, may still be subject to the Assimilated (EU) Drivers’ Hours Rules.
